Florence
Boboli Gardens

May 7, 1998

So peaceful and lovely.

We're at Boboli Gardens, sitting at the Neptune Fountain on steps, surrounded by grass, wildflowers, and relaxed tourists. The frozen lemonade was a divine remedy to our near-dehydration. We can see the entire city from here -- the mountains, the rooftops.

My grandparents took a picture in front of this view forty years ago. I can feel them standing where I stand.

The famous view of the rooftops from Boboli Gardens
-- the one that graces a thousand postcards -- was splendid.

Bill Bryson, Neither Here Nor There

I think Boboli Gardens is my very favorite place in Florence. It's sunny and breezy and we've been taking pictures like mad. I wonder how differently I would see things if the only pictures I took were in my head. Maybe we should buy haltertops, because they seem to be the garment of choice. Who knew that Italians love to be naked? Not me. There are so many beautiful men here, it is unbelievable.

I truly love Boboli Gardens. The hills, the mazes of trails, the fountains, the roses, the lemon trees, the sunlight and shadows, and the Secret Gardens around every corner.

Here's where I imagined that I was Mary Lennox.
