The Journeys Made

1. What did you do in 2004 that you'd never done before?

Went to France, England, Scotland, and Wales.

2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?

My only new year's resolution was to be brave, and I think that I kept it. I took a trip to Europe with my sister and faced a lot of my stupid fears in the process. I kept writing this journal even after I found out that a friend found it. I signed up for the online personals. I even kept going out with a guy that I really liked instead of fleeing in terror relative to the entire prospect. I am proud of myself for that. I haven't thought about 2005 resolutions yet.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?

Yes, and I was there.

4. Did anyone close to you die?

My great-aunt died.

5. What countries did you visit?

See number one above.

6. What would you like to have in 2005 that you lacked in 2004?

A regular series of full nights of sleep.

7. What dates from 2004 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?

I don't know that I will remember the particular dates, but the days we spent in Normandy, at Tintern Abbey, and at Lake Derwentwater will probably always be three of my favorite days of all time. And that weekend in New Orleans was pretty damn fun, too.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Coming to grips with some of my fear and phobia issues and surviving another year of wrangling all four of the pets into occasional submission and not killing Daisy when she chipped my tooth.

9. What was your biggest failure?

Yet again failing to maintain a regular exercise routine.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?

Not really, other than my weird skin issues.

11. What was the best thing you bought?

I really do have a sick love for my faux wood blinds.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?

I'm gonna have to go with the lovely Sundry and say Jon Stewart.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

The entire George W. Bush administration.

14. Where did most of your money go?

My trip.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?

The release of The Office Christmas special.

16. What song will always remind you of 2004?

Probably "Such Great Heights". (Both versions.)

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:

a) happier or sadder? Happier!
b) thinner or fatter? Fatter. Of course!
c) richer or poorer? Richer!

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?

Exercising. Volunteering. Reading actual books.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Worrying. Grinding my teeth. Eating chocolate by the metric ton.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?

I spent Christmas with my family and my new crush at the same time and the world miraculously did not implode.

21. Did you fall in love in 2004?

No, but to my happy surprise, I discovered that it's still possible for me to fall into serious like.

22. How many one-night stands?

None yet!

23. What was your favorite TV program?

Joan of Arcadia, Everwood, The Amazing Race, Veronica Mars, The Office

24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?

I tend to fleetingly hate a lot of people on any given day, but it usually passes quickly.

25. What was the best book you read?

I almost hate to say this, but I really did get a lot out of He's Just Not That Into You. (Ducking)

26. What was your greatest musical discovery?

eastmountainsouth.

27. What did you want and get?

Faux wood blinds, a paid-off car, a refinance.

28. What did you want and not get?

A new president. Peace on earth.

29. What was your favorite film of this year?

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Garden State, Before Sunset

30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

Family dinner. Turned 29. Got a little drunk on red wine.

31. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?

If I had not gotten into so many stupid fights with such an alarming number of people.

32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2004?

I have wanted a pink coat since the first time I saw Grease, and I finally have one. It has changed my life.

33. What kept you sane?

I don't know that I'd go so far as to call myself sane.

34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?

Timmy Canterbury.

35. What political issue stirred you the most?

Probably gay marriage. And, of course, the war.

36. Whom did you miss?

Buffy Summers.

37. Who was the best new person you met?

He wasn't exactly a new person, but I was very happy to finally meet Andrew. Oh! And my new crush.

38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2004.

Everything in life is only for now.

39. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.

I just wanna live the life I please
I don't want no enemies
I don't want nothin' if I have to fake it
Never take nothin' don't belong to me
Everything's paid for nothing's free
If I give my heart
Will you promise not to break it

Or …

I thought a light went out, but now the candle shines.
I thought my tears wouldn't stop, but then I dried my eyes.
And after all of this, the truth that holds me here
Is that this emptiness is something not to fear.
Yeah, I'll keep wondering how we know where we belong,
After all the journeys made, and the journeys yet to come.
When I feel like giving up instead of going on,
Somewhere in between.

12/27:

This weather is perfect and I wish it would stay like this forever.

12/25:

Zuko is now crying in his bed and I wish Tom the Trainer would come over and lay hands on him and mystically calm him like he did the wild horses.

12/24:

I am kind of worn out just like the masses by parties and gluttony.

2001

12/25:

I want to tell you of this Christmas and how much it already means to me.

2000

12/28:

We spend time doing things like concocting art exhibits composed of snack food shaped like genitalia.
