Jason Bateman ~ Arrested Development It is nice to see him on this list. Does anyone else remember him on Silver Spoons or as the brother on It's Your Move? I loved that show so much. It's probably best not to speak of The Hogan Family, but Jason Bateman's work has always been solid. Ray Romano ~ Everybody Loves Raymond Oh, Raymond. I went through a phase when I loved this show and had to watch the reruns every night. I am over that phase. He is likable, but it's time for some new blood. Zach Braff ~ Scrubs Joy and righteousness. Finally. I hope he wins. Even though I think his teeth capper did a poor job. Eric McCormack ~ Will & Grace This show is old and tired. He's won before. Make way for Braff. Tony Shalhoub ~ Monk I want to say that I think he won last year. Sure, he's great. But it's someone else's turn, and his initials are Z.B. Lead Actress in a Comedy Series Marcia Cross ~ Desperate Housewives Here we go. Teri Hatcher ~ Desperate Housewives I've only seen this show a few times, and it never really stuck with me. All I can really think about Teri Hatcher is that she's too skinny, her face looks kind of weird, and I will never love her more than I did as the sister in Tango and Cash. Although she did say on Oprah that she's a huge Mary Chapin Carpenter fan, so she can't be all bad. Felicity Huffman ~ Desperate Housewives Oh, my sweet Felicity. Is there any question of who should win in this category? She deserves to be recognized not only for her fine work on this show as the frazzled, haggard mom but of course for her two seasons of incomparable brilliance as Dana Whitaker. I will seriously dance around the coffee table if she wins, for my love for her is abiding and true. Jane Kaczmarek ~ Malcom in the Middle I like seeing her at these shows mostly because I love the lovely coupleness exuded by her and Bradley Whitford. They are always so nice on the red carpet, even to the most annoying correspondents, and their speeches are always great. [This is what I wrote about her last year, and I still feel the same way.] Patricia Heaton ~ Everybody Loves Raymond She is great. She has won a million times. The show is over. I hope she does something new soon, because she's good, but it is Felicity's category all the way. Lead Actor in a Drama Series James Spader ~ Boston Legal I think he won last year. I do not think he will win again. He will be Steff to me for all time. Ian McShane ~ Deadwood Sometimes I can't muster any opinion of any of these people. This is not one of those times. It's a shame that he's the only actor from this show recognized, but it's great that he is on the list. He is good. He is so good. Once upon a time I had never seen this show, and I truly feel like my life must have been a wasteland of TV suck. It's an amazing show, and he is incredible on it. He is scary and funny and crazy and somehow even sympathetic sometimes, miraculously enough. It will be a really unjust moment on this stupid awards show if his name is not called. Kiefer Sutherland ~ 24 Oh, Kiefer. Now you know what we are, now you know what you are. You'll never grow old, Michael, and you'll never die, but you must feed. (Weird blood sniffing licking sound.) Hugh Laurie ~ House Huzzah! If McShane does not win, this is the only acceptable alternative. This show is alright, I mean, the medical stuff is cool and the mysteries are complicated and it's all entertaining, but it would not be anything great if not for Hugh Laurie, who causes people to stop what they are doing and become hypnotized by his every word and movement. He is fucking great. And I recently saw him on a Friends rerun where he's sitting next to Rachel on her way to England to crash Ross and Emily's wedding and he tells her she's a horrible person and it is WONDERFUL because I always thought that Rachel was a horrible person. And of course he's in Sense and Sensibility. I am glad he is getting props for House because he's been around a long time and he is awesome on it. Hank Azaria ~ Huff I've never seen this. Hank Azaria will always be Agador Spartacus to me, dancing around in cutoff denim shorts to Miami Sound Machine and tripping all over the place while trying to serve dinner because he had to wear shoes. If there is ever a better performance delivered by him than that one, I will be surprised. Lead Actress in a Drama Series Jennifer Garner ~ Alias Oh, Jennifer Damn Garner. First Noel, then Vaughn, and now Affleck. Jennifer Garner is someone I cannot hate no matter how I try. I was a big fan of this show in the beginning, and even though it's lost me in recent years, I will always kind of think she kicks ass on it and not be able to dislike her for some unknown reason. Perhaps it was the way she delivered the line "We're going to Ye Waverly Inn" on the season one Thanksgiving episode of Felicity. Patricia Arquette ~ Medium Alabama Whitman Worley will always be special to me. I was surprised to see her nominated in such a major category because Medium seems like a pretty small show, but what do I know? "So I just said, 'Alabama, come clean …'" I think it would be delightful if she were to win. Mariska Hargitay ~ Law & Order: SVU I am sure Maryelizabeth and Shelley are thrilled about this, but I still can't watch this show because I just can't fill my head with such things. They get really annoyed with me when I say this for they are its biggest fans. Glenn Close ~ The Shield I cannot get over the fact that they are making a Sunset Boulevard movie with her and Ewan McGregor. That is all I can say about her right now. I can't really see Ewan as Joe Gillis, but as long as Beyonce or Jessica Simpson is not cast as Betty Shaefer, I'm happy to sit back and watch that man unleash his beautiful vocal stylings. Frances Conroy ~ Six Feet Under I've only seen this show a few times, but she always impresses me on it.
Jeffrey Tambor ~ Arrested Development He is a funny dude. This is a funny show. Brad Garrett ~ Everybody Loves Raymond Robert is one of the funniest characters on this show, but I just feel like it's time to let it go. Peter Boyle ~ Everybody Loves Raymond Peter Boyle is allowed to win. He's the only one from this show who never has (I think), and that must make him feel somewhat like shit. Jeremy Piven ~ Entourage I am a person who thinks that Jeremy Piven is hilarious in everything he ever does. I have never seen him on this show, but I am fully confident that he rocks on it. I loved him on Cupid, and I pretty much think he is swell. Sean Hayes ~ Will & Grace Old. TIRED.
Doris Roberts ~ Everybody Loves Raymond She's already won, so moving on. Jessica Walter ~ Arrested Development It'd be nice to see anyone from this show recognized. Holland Taylor ~ Two & a Half Men Who in the hell actually watches this show? A lot of people, apparently. I remember being so annoyed years ago when she won best supporting actress in a drama for The Practice on which she was barely even a character. Conchatta Ferrell ~ Two & a Half Men I have always liked this actress and wouldn't mind seeing her win even though I've never seen this show. Megan Mullally ~ Will & Grace She's always good, but she's already won.
William Shatner ~ Boston Legal Whatever! Oliver Platt ~ Huff Once upon a time when I was a dumb young high school student, my girlfriends and I thought that Flatliners was our new favorite movie, and we agreed that he was the best thing in it. Terry O'Quinn ~ Lost Locke is creepy and you really can't look away when he's onscreen. We all know that he knows something we don't, and I think that's made us never lose interest in his character. He does a good job. Solid. I've watched this show with friends before, and such theories are exclaimed involutarily when he's onscreen: "Locke is God!" "Locke is Satan!" "Locke is the spirit of the island come to life!" "Locke is going to kill them all!" "Locke is the Messiah!" I'd be glad to see him win. Naveen Andrews ~ Lost Sayid is one of the better characters on this show. It is strange sometimes for me to think of my Kip, devoted Sikh in The English Patient, as an Iraqi soldier, let alone one who lives with Barbara Hershey in real life. He's good on this just like he always is. Alan Alda ~ The West Wing I am over this show.
Sandra Oh ~ Grey's Anatomy I haven't seen this. Tyle Daly ~ Judging Amy I can't believe I'm saying this, but I was saddened by this show's cancellation. I started getting into it through reruns on the Hallmark Channel, which apparently aren't even on anymore. Curses. She is unceasingly amazing, and I know I have said this before, but her recitation of "Love Is Not All" at the end of her Lifetime Intimate Portrait has actually put me on the floor sobbing every time I've ever seen it. It is something I would like to own. I wish she would take care of herself because she just doesn't look that good these days, but I do really like her so very much no matter how many times she's won any award before like a big awards hog. She deserves all of them. Blythe Danner ~ Huff Not even. I hated her Southern accent so much in The Prince of Tides that I've never liked her since. CCH Pounder ~ The Shield I think she's another one who's won for a supporting role (for ER) when she was nothing more than a glorified guest star. That irritates me. Stockard Channing ~ The West Wing Unless her role has gotten a lot bigger than it used to be, I still don't think she deserves to be in this category, even though she is clearly awesome. (Repeat of what I said last year, I think.) Outstanding Drama Series Deadwood It must win. It is clear. THIS IS AN EXCELLENT SHOW, PEOPLE. I mean, it is just superb on every conceivable level. Lost I've seen every episode of this show. I fully admit I started watching it because of Charlie Salinger. I thought it was uneven during its first season, but I always tuned back in to see what was going on. I'm not sure how they will keep it going, but I will definitely be watching the season opener to see what happened to the people on the raft and where in the hell those creepy people took Walt. I think Sawyer is the character that has kept a lot of people watching because he's just such an asshole, but only most of the time, and when Jin and Sun started making up and making out I am not ashamed to say that I burst into tears. The acting on this show is strong across the board (except for maybe Tess from Roswell), and it's nice to have a show work so well with such a huge ensemble. I could live without the end of episode cheesy song montages, but that's really my only complaint. Six Feet Under I am not a faithful viewer of this show. I don't think it's better than Deadwood by any stretch of the imagination. 24 I watched season one of this show and nearly passed out from stress every week. I don't know if it's any good anymore or not. The West Wing If this wins AGAIN? Seriously? When it is so far past its prime? I will actually be pissed! [Repeat of what I said last year.] Outstanding Comedy Series Arrested Development I need to set my TiVo for this one. I've really liked it every time I've seen it. Desperate Housewives This show, for me, does not live up to the hype. Everybody Loves Raymond I don't know if this has ever won best comedy series. I feel like it has not. I could be wrong. It was on for so long! When I was a faithful viewer of this show's reruns, it would make me wet my pants almost sometimes, but sometimes I thought everyone was a jerk. I really did almost die from laughing when Marie sculpted that giant vagina-like thing and it ended up in the living room. I don't know. I would not have any problem with this show being recognized, because I was really fond of it for a while. Scrubs This is such a creative, wonderfully funny show. And then sometimes out of the blue it can break your heart. It has deserved to be in this category for years. YEARS. I would love to see it win. Will & Grace Not even remotely funny anymore. Not even! Even though this year I was so happy to see Debra Messing with some curves again post-pregnancy and not look like someone about to take her last breath while dying from anorexia, I still never laughed once and gave up on it altogether. I don't even know why I have anything to say about the Emmys when so many of my top, number one favorite shows were not recognized -- Everwood, Joan of Arcadia, Veronica Mars. All had moments of such brilliance this season that I think that the awards show concept is just so ridiculous and flawed that I shouldn't bother giving the awards a second thought. But I always do, so I don't know why I am surprised. I just wonder how Jeremy Piven's hair will look on the red carpet.
